ASUU may call off strike on thursday

here are indications that the on-going strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities might be called off next Thursday. Governor of Benue State, Mr Gabriel Suswam who dropped this hint Friday said ASUU and the Federal Government had reached agreements on all the contentious issues that led to the industrial action except two. Suswam who was appointed as Chairman of the Needs Assessment Implementation Committee of the Federal Government said after next Thursday's deliberations between his Committee and the various agencies of government funding tertiary education, all the contentious issues would likely be resolved. Speaking to news men in Abuja after attending a meeting between the Federal Government's delegation and ASUU, Suswam said that agreements had been reached by both parties on all issues except two. Do you know that left over onions are poisonous?

In 1919, when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu…many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died. The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn’t believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy. Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. ‘ASUU deserves its share of the National Cake’ – Past ASUU Chairman

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has insisted that the strike crippling the education sector will persist until the Federal Government finds the money needed to meet their demands. Immediate past chairman of the union at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Aloysius Okolie disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu. Okolie said, “The National Assembly and some executive members are paid jumbo salaries but when it comes to education funding the government has no money. “How will the country be able to achieve its vision 20:2020 of being among the 20 leading economies if the education sector is not well-funded,’’ he asked. “It is unreliable that in some universities student receive lectures under the trees and in stadium. “Books, laboratory equipment in our libraries andlaboratories are outdated while some politicians and government officials are wasting money in building houses in every state capital and buyi...
